Severe Weather
Call 9-911 from an on-campus phone or 911 from a cell phone to report an emergency that requires immediate assistance from police and rescue personnel.
If you receive a FriarALERT or emergency warning or weather alert via television or radio notification:
- Move to a safe location, normally the basement or lowest level of the building.
- Stay away from windows and exterior doors.
- Interior hallways and bathrooms on the lowest level possible offer the best shelter.
- In a high-rise building, vacate the top floors and move to a lower floor (preferably the third floor or below) or basement.
- If you are not able to reach the basement, go to an interior room, hallway, or bathroom with no windows on the lowest floor possible.
- Share notification with others; assist persons with disabilities if possible.
- If you are in a vehicle, get out and seek indoor shelter. If a building is not available, lying in a depression such as a ditch or ravine offers some protection. Be aware of flooding.
- Watch out for flying debris; do not call 911 unless you need emergency assistance.
FLOOD
- Move chemicals, research paperwork, and sensitive equipment to a secure location.
- Water-reactive chemicals should be removed and secured away from the immediate threat.
- Evacuate the building, following the College’s Emergency Evacuation Plan, if/when directed to do so.
- Do not use elevators. Use stairways to leave the building if an evacuation is necessary; assist individuals who cannot evacuate by themselves.
HURRICANE
- Move chemicals, research paperwork, and sensitive equipment to a secure location.
- Move to designated areas or evacuate as ordered by authorities.
- Evacuate the building, following the College’s Emergency Evacuation Plan, if/when directed to do so.
- Do not use elevators. Use stairways to leave the building if an evacuation is necessary; assist individuals who cannot evacuate by themselves.
TORNADO
- Bring all persons inside buildings. Close windows and blinds.
- Move to basement level or small, interior rooms without windows on the lowest floor.
- Stay away from windows and doors.
- Faculty and supervisors should take class rosters and emergency contact lists and account for students and staff once in a safe area.
- Remain in a safe area until the warning expires or until an all-clear signal has been issued.
